We’re living in a moment where jobseekers have a powerful new tool at their fingertips: artificial intelligence. AI tools like ChatGPT can help you polish your resume, scan job boards in real time, and even write a decent cover letter.
But let me say this clearly: just because AI can write for you doesn’t mean it should replace your voice.
I’ve seen a lot of AI-generated resumes lately, some from folks who paid good money for resume-writing tools, and they often look like a mess. Multiple columns. Over-designed templates. Zero focus on results or accomplishments. It’s not a good look. And worse, these resumes often bury your story instead of highlighting it.
That’s part of why people still choose to work with a job search coach. Not because they can’t do it on their own, but because they want someone to hold space with them. Someone who can help pull out the right accomplishments, craft a stronger narrative, and make sure their experience shows up clearly to the humans reviewing their applications.
Still, AI can be really helpful when used well. The key is to treat it like a support tool, not the main writer. Here are a few ways I think jobseekers should use AI without losing their voice in the process.
✅ 1. Use ChatGPT to strengthen your resume, not write it from scratch
Ask:
“Can you check this resume for grammar and clarity? Are my bullet points results-focused?”
Let AI help you tighten your language and catch errors, but don't ask it to make things up. I've seen it fabricate job duties, skills, even outcomes. Your resume should reflect the real work you’ve done, with specific results where possible.
✅ 2. Use AI to identify gaps in your resume
Paste in a job description and your resume. Then ask:
“Based on this job description, am I a strong fit? What am I missing that would strengthen my application?”
This is one of the best ways to use AI. It helps you spot missing keywords, skills, or examples that might not be showing up clearly on your resume.
✅ 3. Use it to clean up your cover letters
Instead of letting AI write your cover letters, write a draft yourself. Then ask:
“Can you check this for grammar, tone, and flow? Make sure it sounds professional but still human.”
Let AI be your editor, not your ghostwriter. You still want the voice to sound like you.
✅ 4. Use AI to pull fresh job postings
Try a prompt like:
“Can you find nonprofit or social impact jobs that were posted in the last 24 hours and include the links?”
With the right tools and access, AI can help you stay on top of new roles that match your interests, especially if you're targeting a niche like education or mission-driven organizations.
✅ 5. Use AI to prep for interviews
Drop in a job description and ask:
“What kinds of interview questions should I expect for this role?”
“Can you give me mock interview questions based on this job post?”
You can even get more tailored help by saying:
“What STAR (Situation, Task, Action, Result) stories from my resume would be a good fit for this role?”
A final word: Keep the pen in your hand
AI is helpful. It can make you faster, more organized, and more prepared. But it won’t replace the story only you can tell. The people reading your application want to understand who you are, not just what you’ve done. So use AI to help polish the message but keep your voice at the center.
